UNEA-5: Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

The first session of UNEA-5 (the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly) took place virtually on 22-23 February 2021, adopting three procedural decisions and holding a Leadership Dialogue with 87 Ministers and high-level representatives.
Among the important decisions adopted, Member States endorsed the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) for 2022-2025 for UNEP and the programme of work and budget for the biennium 2022-2033. The MTS will keep UNEP focused on the triple challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Agreements were also reached to establish trust funds for a number of initiatives.
At the high-level Leadership Dialogue, eight key messages emerged, ranging from the interlinkages between nature and human health to crucial role that UNEP has to play as the leading global environmental authority.
The Assembly decided that UNEA-5 will resume for an in-person segment from 28 February to 4 March 2022, consisting of plenary meetings, leadership dialogues, and the adoption of a political declaration. It will also include a special session commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of UNEP.
